4] Freshers 2026; Protection is now on the drinks order
As students arrive at universities across the UK, hospitality venues have an opportunity to put practical drink-spiking prevention in place before their first Freshers event.
BevGARDien® anti-spiking drink covers are now available through LWC Drinks, supplied through Amber Beverage UK. Existing LWC customers can therefore add protective drink covers to their normal drinks orders using product code 31172048.
Official GOV.UK guidance specifically includes making protective drink covers available to customers who want them.
In this important new article, BevGARDien® co-founders George and Will Rowley explain why protection should be available from the first night, how drink covers complement wider venue safeguarding and what hospitality managers can do now.
Majority of spiking is via the addition of substances to alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks:
The Dangers of Spiked Drinks: Awareness & Support
Drink spiking is a serious and criminal act that involves adding alcohol or drugs to someone’s drink without their knowledge or consent. It can happen in any setting-bars, clubs, festivals, house parties, or even private gatherings – and effects people of all genders and ages.
What Makes Spiking So Dangerous?
Unpredictable effects: Spiking substances can cause confusion, nausea, hallucinations, memory loss. Unconsciousness, and impaired co-ordination.
Invisible substances: Many drugs used in spiking are colourless, tasteless, and odourless, making them nearly impossible to detect.
Rapid onset: Symptoms can appear within 15-30 minutes and last for several hours.
Increased vulnerability: Victims may become targets of theft, sexual assault, or physical harm.
Under reporting: Many incidents go un-reported due to memory loss, shame, or fear of disbelief.
According to UK police data, over 6,700 reports of spiking were made in the year ending April 2023, with women accounting for 74% of victims and an average age of 26.

To directly assist union teams, the BevGARDien device is now available through the purchasing consortium, enabling venues to efficiently restock alongside their regular drinks orders. Smaller quantities are also available via a dedicated web portal, offering flexible support for union welfare teams to integrate these devices into their local safety initiatives.
COUNTERSPIKE
CounterSpike
CounterSpike continues to play an important role in the fight against drink spiking through the development of rapid point-of-use testing technology designed to help people identify the possible presence of commonly used spiking drugs in drinks. Its SpikeStixx testing strips use colour-change technology to provide a fast indication where certain amine-based substances may be present, helping individuals make informed decisions and seek assistance where appropriate. The organisation recognises that no single test can detect every substance, but views testing as one part of a wider approach to improving personal safety and public awareness.
Alongside its testing products, CounterSpike continues to invest in education, venue training and public awareness, promoting practical measures that encourage safer social environments. Through ongoing product development, research and collaboration with partners, the organisation aims to improve confidence in drink safety while supporting wider efforts to reduce the impact of drink spiking. CounterSpike’s work demonstrates how testing technologies can complement education, prevention initiatives and stronger legislation as part of a broader strategy to tackle this growing issue.
Spike detection keychains (usa)
Abigail Goddard provides clinical-grade drink spike detection keychains, that let people test their drinks in seconds, giving them a fast and discreet way to protect themselves on a night out. Her mission is to make nightlife safer by putting reliable, science-backed tools directly in people’s hands, so no one has to second-guess their drinks. Drink-spiking remains a serious problem across the United States, with 90% of cases going unreported, but momentum for change is building state by state. In Tennessee, for example, new server-training requirements took effect in January 2025, mandating that alcohol servers receive education on sexual-assault prevention and date-rape drug awareness, while lawmakers and advocates are now pushing for the next wave of protections, including on-site drink-testing resources at nightlife venues, clearer pathways for victims to access toxicology testing without needing to file a police report, and better state wide data collection to track incidents and measure progress.
Tennessee isn’t alone. California has already made testing kits and lids a legal requirement for many venues, and states including Washington, New York, Massachusetts, and Illinois have similar legislation in progress. These grassroots and legislative efforts reflect a growing recognition that prevention, victim-centered healthcare, and public awareness must work together, and it’s exactly the kind of systemic change she is proud to support as we work toward a future where every night out is a safe one.

Dr Amy Burrell
Dr Amy Burrell (University of Birmingham, UK) Spiking Research Fellow
Dr Burrell has been researching crime and policing related topics for over 20 years. This includes night-time economy violence, sexual offending and, more recently, spiking. She co-authored a literature review in 2023 reviewing 87 academic sources from around the world to collate evidence on the prevalence of, and motivations for, spiking. She collaborated with colleagues from Bournemouth University to conduct a survey which gathered participant experiences of spiking (being spiked, and spiking others) publishing a summary of key findings from this data on motivations to engage in spiking behaviour. She led a research project in 2025/26 which gathered additional evidence on the motivations for spiking. Resources developed based on this work is free to access on her ResearchGate profile (see below for a list). If you are interested in finding out more about this research she can be contacted on a.burrell@bham.ac.uk

Drink Safety Standards UK
Drink Safety Standard UK
Drink Safety Standard UK (DSSUK)
Drink Safety Standard UK (DSSUK) is a citizen-led campaign founded by Bets (@WithLoveBets), calling for a simple change to the Licensing Act 2003 that would require all licensed venues in England and Wales serving open drinks to provide free anti-spiking drink covers on request. The campaign believes that preventing spiking should become a visible and practical part of venue safety, helping to protect customers while allowing them to enjoy social occasions with greater confidence.
Working alongside Spike Aware UK, BevGARDien and a growing coalition of charities, researchers, academics, hospitality businesses, policymakers and campaigners, DSSUK is helping drive legislative change and greater public awareness. Its parliamentary petition aims to secure 100,000 signatures to trigger consideration for debate in Parliament, supporting a future where practical drink protection becomes a standard safety measure across licensed venues.
